Description

Art Print Residence is delighted to welcome Tadashi Kobayashi from Japan for a special exploration of contemporary approaches to Mokulito. A student of the inventor of the technique, he is considered one of the early artists to have introduced and presented Mokulito internationally, outside of Japan.

Workshop Overview

In this 5-day Mokulito workshop, participants will create two different types of Mokulito plates under the guidance of Japanese printmaker Tadashi Kobayashi.

Plate A: Mokulito using solid markers
Plate B: Mokulito using oil paint with a drying medium

Participants will also experience printing with Kobayashi’s original octagonal baren, a unique hand-printing tool developed through extensive experimentation to achieve the strong pressure required for Mokulito. Both hand printing and press printing will be explored.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will complete multiple prints and gain a deep understanding of the expressive possibilities of Mokulito.

Japanese Papermaking & Mokuhanga Journey 2026 / 2

Starting from an idea developed by  Art Print Residence, we brought together two worlds that have been deeply connected for centuries: handmade washi paper and traditional Japanese mokuhanga woodblock printing.

We are excited to welcome our second group of printmaking artists to Japan, with participants joining us from Canada, Quebec, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, and the United States.

Together, they will explore and learn ancestral Japanese techniques linked to the very origins of printmaking through an immersive experience focused on craftsmanship, natural materials, and tradition.
