Leslie Koptcho

Leslie Koptcho, artist resident, April – May 2023. I spent the last month in bliss as an artist in residence at Art Print Residence in Arenys de Munt, Spain. I returned home with a portfolio of prints, refreshed by the experience of working in a dynamic and inspirational environment. This was my second APR residency, and each visit was equally productive and rewarding. I highly recommend this residency, especially to those whose art practice is focused on intaglio print processes.

Jordi and Claudia Roses, the proprietors, are masterful printmakers, committed to sharing knowledge and supporting each artist’s objectives. They give each artist their full attention. The print studio is remarkable: it is fully equipped and supplied with everything a print artist might need; it’s especially well maintained and organized; and it’s a very pleasant and conducive place to create—all just steps away from your accommodations, which are pleasant, well-lit, and immaculately clean.  The shop radiates a great community vibe, and every artist I had the pleasure to interact with was friendly, and fully engaged with their work.

APR is strategically located, a short, scenic train ride away from Barcelona. It is situated between the lovely seaside town of Arenys de Mar and the mountain-side town of Arenys de Munt; the residence offers a beautiful view the Mediterranean Sea. The towns’ residents and businesses are friendly and welcoming.

One of the weekly highlights a resident can look forward to is the Monday morning trip to the local farmer’s market where you can purchase fresh produce. It was especially pleasurable to share the kitchen and cook with others, but equally enjoyable to relish the offerings of a local restaurant after a hard day’s work in the printshop—think paella and gelato. The area offers an abundance of open markets, festivals, and events to experience; some of the opportunities for weekend trips include Barcelona (with its many museums), Girona, Montserrat, and other places along the breathtaking Costa Brava. It’s also very easy to travel by train to destinations outside of Catalunya.

Being at APR feels like a true home away from home. Given the chance, I would return in a heartbeat. And no doubt it would be a different but amazing experience.
