Description

Art Print Residence is delighted to welcome Tadashi Kobayashi from Japan for a special exploration of contemporary approaches to Mokulito. A student of the inventor of the technique, he is considered one of the early artists to have introduced and presented Mokulito internationally, outside of Japan.

Workshop Overview

In this 5-day Mokulito workshop, participants will create two different types of Mokulito plates under the guidance of Japanese printmaker Tadashi Kobayashi.

Plate A: Mokulito using solid markers
Plate B: Mokulito using oil paint with a drying medium

Participants will also experience printing with Kobayashi’s original octagonal baren, a unique hand-printing tool developed through extensive experimentation to achieve the strong pressure required for Mokulito. Both hand printing and press printing will be explored.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will complete multiple prints and gain a deep understanding of the expressive possibilities of Mokulito.

Caterina Pioletti

Caterina Pioletti — Italy
Artist in Residence · April 2026

In April 2026, Caterina Pioletti, an artist from Italy, completed an artist residency at Art Print Residence centred on the Complete Mokulito Workshop.

During her stay, Caterina participated in the course together with Kamila Kościańska, developing her practice through an intensive exploration of Mokulito, the lithographic printing technique based on wooden matrices.

The workshop was led by Ariadna Abadal, who guided the artists through the different stages of the process, from preparing and drawing on the wood plate to processing, inking and printing.

Throughout the residency, Caterina explored the distinctive graphic and expressive qualities of Mokulito, experimenting with line, texture, tonal variation and the particular interaction between the wooden surface and lithographic processes.

Her residency at Art Print Residence offered an opportunity to deepen her knowledge of this contemporary printmaking technique while developing new possibilities within her own artistic practice.
