Brian Giles — Ireland

In June 2026, Brian Giles, an artist from Ireland, completed an artist residency at Art Print Residence, exploring different approaches to relief and intaglio printmaking through wood, texture and experimental plate-making.
During his stay, Brian participated in a Collagraph and Carborundum on Plywood Course, led by Jordi Rosés. Working directly on plywood, he explored the possibilities of building textured surfaces with collagraph and carborundum techniques, experimenting with different materials, marks, tonal values and methods of inking and printing.
Brian also took part in a Woodcut Course, led by Ariadna Abadal, where he explored the expressive qualities of carving and printing from woodblocks. The course allowed him to investigate the natural characteristics of wood, carved marks, textures and the relationship between the matrix and the final printed image.
Combining collagraph, carborundum and woodcut provided Brian with the opportunity to approach the wooden matrix from different perspectives, bringing together relief and intaglio processes within his artistic research.
His residency at Art Print Residence offered an intensive period of technical experimentation and creative development, expanding the possibilities of texture, surface and mark-making within his printmaking practice.
