Workshop Description
This five-day workshop explores the meeting of Eastern and Western approaches to printmaking through press-free hand-printed monotype, collage, and chine-collé. Combining the spontaneity of Western monotype with the material qualities of Eastern papers, participants will explore how prints can be created, fragmented, layered, and reconstructed into new images.
The workshop begins with a short field observation session, gathering visual references from the surrounding landscape through sketches, photographs, textures, shapes, and other details that catch our attention. Back in the studio, participants will translate these observations into a growing collection of monotypes, printed entirely by hand without the use of a press.
Rather than treating each monotype as a finished work, participants will use these prints as material for further image-making. Over the following days, prints will be cut, torn, edited, rearranged, and recombined through collage, with particular attention to scale, repetition, transparency, negative space, and layering.
Working with Eastern papers, participants will explore how the character and translucency of the paper can become an active part of the image. Chine-collé will then bring these printed fragments and layers together into more resolved compositions.
Throughout the workshop, participants will move continuously between printing and composing—responding to what emerges, printing new elements when needed, and allowing images to develop gradually through the process.
Open to different levels of printmaking experience, the workshop emphasizes experimentation, material sensitivity, and the development of a personal visual language.
Five-Day Programme
Day 1 — Observe, Collect & Print
We will begin with an introduction to the workshop, followed by a field observation session in the surrounding landscape. Participants will gather visual references through photographs, sketches, textures, shapes, patterns, and other details. Back in the studio, we will begin exploring press-free hand-printed monotype techniques on Eastern papers and start building a collection of printed material.
Day 2 — Experiment & Build
Participants will continue exploring hand-printed monotype through additive and subtractive methods, masking, layering, transparency, ghost images, and variations in scale and value. The focus will be on experimentation and developing a rich visual library rather than producing individual finished monotypes.
Day 3 — Print, Fragment & Compose
Monotype printing will continue while participants begin cutting, tearing, cropping, and isolating elements from their dried prints. Through collage and temporary arrangements, we will explore composition, scale, repetition, rhythm, transparency, and negative space. Participants can move back and forth between composing and printing as their images develop.
Day 4 — Layer & Chine-collé
Participants will explore the qualities of Eastern papers and their possibilities for layering, transparency, and image construction. Chine-collé will be introduced as a way of bringing printed fragments, paper, and composition together into more resolved works.
Day 5 — Respond, Refine & Resolve
The final day will focus on continued chine-collé, editing, layering, and recomposition. Participants will respond to the results of the process and aim to develop a small body of approximately 3–5 finished layered works. We will conclude with a group discussion and sharing of the works and experiments produced throughout the week.
