In March 2026, Ruth Johnston, an artist from Scotland, completed an artist residency at Art Print Residence, focusing on the exploration of intaglio printmaking techniques.
During her stay, Ruth participated in a Soap Ground Workshop, led by Ariadna Abadal.
The workshop focused on the creative possibilities of soap ground, an intaglio technique that allows the artist to work directly and expressively on the plate, creating painterly marks, textures and a wide range of tonal effects.
Under the guidance of Ariadna Abadal, Ruth explored the different stages of the process, from preparing and applying the ground to etching and printing the plate, experimenting with the particular qualities that this technique can bring to an image.
Her residency at Art Print Residence offered her the opportunity to deepen her knowledge of intaglio printmaking while incorporating new technical and expressive possibilities into her artistic practice.
