From March to April 2026, Colleen Premer, an artist from the United States, completed an artist residency at Art Print Residence, combining different printmaking techniques and approaches during her stay.
Colleen participated in a Collagraph and Carborundum on Cardboard Course, led by Ariadna Abadal. During the course, she explored the creative possibilities of building textured printing plates using cardboard, collagraph materials and carborundum, experimenting with surfaces, textures, tonal values and different approaches to printing.
She also participated in the Innovations in Mokuhanga Course, an intensive program dedicated to contemporary approaches to Japanese water-based woodblock printing.
The course was led by Prof. Keiko Hara and Prof. Benjamin Selby, with Ariadna Abadal as Teacher Assistant and workshop support.
Throughout the course, Colleen explored different approaches to Mokuhanga, combining traditional Japanese woodblock printing principles with contemporary methods and experimentation.
Her residency at Art Print Residence provided an opportunity to work across two very different printmaking processes — the rich textures of collagraph and carborundum and the delicate, water-based qualities of Mokuhanga — expanding the technical and creative possibilities of her artistic practice.
